For the first time in 19 years the fashion House Prada features a black model in their latest campaign . Prada’s images for autum/winter 2013 were released and Kenyan born Malaika Firth is featured in the spread. Music Power and Politics would like to congratulate Malaika on this wonderful mark in her career, Naomi Campbell had to date been the only black model to be featured in a Prada Campaign in 1994 the year Firth was born.
Prada has been visionary in terms of its outlook embracing older male models and curvier women on their runways, it has been slow to add racial diversity to its campaigns before Jourdan Dunn was included in its 2008 catwalk show, Campbell stood as the last black model to walk for the brand, back in 1993.
Fashion and race is a topic that runs deep, aside from fashion the lack of visible faces of colour has been a subject that television presenter Reggie Yates and singer Alesha Dixon have pointed out. Is it the responsibility of producers and casters to add more diversity or should we continue to allow the ‘master narrative’ to play on?
Kind thanks to Monica Mwangi who kindly pointed out the story out, Music, Power and Politics
